CT scan

What is a CT scan?

A computed tomography CT scan is an imaging test that combines X-rays and computer technology to produce images of the body. Unlike a simple X-ray study, it provides a higher level of detail, creating a computerized 360-degree view of the body’s structures.

MRI scan

What is an MRI scan?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic test that uses magnetic fields, radio waves, and computer technology to produce images of the inside of the body.
MRI is widely used across various medical specialties, including neurology, orthopedics, and oncology. It is particularly valuable for visualizing soft tissues, organs, and joints, providing important diagnostic information for a range of medical conditions. By analyzing the different signals emitted by various tissues, MRI can generate images that help doctors develop diagnoses and treatment plans.
Before undergoing an MRI procedure, you will be asked to remove all metal objects to prevent interaction with the magnets inside the MRI machine. If you have any metal inside your body, undergoing an MRI scan may be unsafe.

Which conditions require an MRI?

MRI is especially useful for detecting sports injuries and musculoskeletal disorders, including:

What is the difference between MRI and CT scans?

If a patient is unable to undergo an MRI, a CT scan may be recommended. Because MRI machines contain powerful magnets, individuals with metal implants, pacemakers, or other implanted devices should not have an MRI. CT scans can produce images of both bones and soft tissues; however, they are less effective than MRI at revealing subtle differences between types of tissue.


X-ray

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray is an imaging test that can capture the internal structures of your body, including bones and soft tissues. X-rays use a small amount of radiation that passes through the body to quickly produce a single image of the anatomy for assessing injury or disease. Areas high in calcium, such as bones and teeth, block the radiation and appear white on the image. Soft tissues allow radiation to pass through and appear gray or black on the image.

Which conditions require an X-ray?

  • Fractures

  • Dislocations

  • Misalignments

  • Narrowed joint spaces


Ultrasound Examination

An ultrasound examination is a non-invasive imaging method that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of structures inside the body. It works through the reflection and echo of sound waves.

When sound waves encounter a tissue boundary or organ, some of them are reflected back as echoes. A computer processes this information to create real-time images on a monitor.

Ultrasound imaging is particularly useful for visualizing soft tissues, such as organs, muscles, blood vessels, and developing fetuses during pregnancy. 

It can help assess organ size, blood flow, abnormalities, and guide medical procedures such as biopsies or needle aspirations.

Because ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionizing radiation, it is considered safe and does not pose the same risks as X-rays or other radiation-based imaging technologies.
